Artist Salome Jaffe enters a new phase of public engagement with her participation in The People’s Artist Award, an initiative led by Johnny Depp in collaboration with The Art of Elysium and Artforum. Distinct from traditional juried competitions, the award is determined entirely by public vote, positioning audience mobilization as the decisive factor in an artist’s advancement.

Jaffe’s work stands apart for its materially driven process—one rooted in chemistry as much as aesthetics. Working with acid, fire, and metal, she orchestrates controlled chemical reactions that yield richly textured surfaces. The rusted patinas that define her pieces are not applied but emerge through oxidation, shaped by variables such as humidity, temperature, and pH levels. This reliance on environmental conditions makes her practice experimental, requiring a carefully controlled studio setting to achieve consistent results.

Conceptually, Jaffe centers women’s autonomy and identity. Her recurring use of the female figure is less about representation than authorship—asserting presence, agency, and historical continuity. Recently, she has begun integrating oil painting onto her treated metal surfaces, creating layered compositions that merge gestural figuration with elemental transformation.

With voting open from May 4 through May 14, Jafee is approaching the competition with a grassroots strategy, emphasizing direct community engagement and peer-to-peer visibility. The prize—$25,000, a featured exhibition at The Art of Elysium’s Salon, and editorial coverage in Artforum—offers not just financial support but significant institutional exposure.

Her participation reflects a broader shift in contemporary art ecosystems, where audience networks and digital reach increasingly shape opportunity alongside artistic merit.

Cast your vote for Jaffe beginning May 4
