PAUL BRANTON’S ART COMMEMORATES 15 YEARS OF LAUGHTER AT MARTHA'S VINEYARD COMEDY FEST

Artist Paul Branton has created a vibrant commemorative portrait celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the Martha's Vineyard Comedy Fest, honoring longtime host Damon Williams, whose wit and unmistakable stage presence have become synonymous with the festival. Commissioned by festival founder Steve Capers, the painting captures Williams in Branton's signature expressive style, using bold color, layered symbolism, and cultural references to tell the story of a legacy built through laughter.

Williams is depicted with his characteristic head tilt and microphone in hand; the familiar pose audiences have come to love over fifteen years. Embedded within his shirt are the faces of comedy giants Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Bernie Mac, acknowledging the lineage of Black comedy that continues through Williams' work. Rather than functioning as a traditional logo, the large number 15 becomes an organic part of the composition, standing alongside references to The Strand Theatre, the festival's longtime home, while repeated references to culture and legacy reinforce the event's lasting impact.

Founded by former cable television executive Steve Capers, whose career helped shape programming for leading comedy networks, the Martha's Vineyard Comedy Fest has become one of the nation's premier celebrations of Black comedy and culture.
