THE ART OF BLACKNESS 2026 EXPLORES MEMORY, TRUTH, AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF BLACK FUTURES

The Art of Blackness at Block 37 is a celebrated exhibition platform that continues its mission of amplifying Black artists while creating space for dialogue around identity, history, and the future. Curated by LaShun Tines, Justin Dwaun Redding, and Anefertiti Bowman, this year's exhibition asks audiences to consider what emerges when truth is honored, memory is preserved, and imagination is embraced as a force for transformation.
Presented as the United States reflects on its 250th anniversary, The Art of Blackness 2026 challenges visitors to examine the stories that have shaped the nation while elevating narratives that have too often been overlooked or erased. Through painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and interdisciplinary practices, participating artists explore resilience, cultural inheritance, and the evolving experiences that define Black life.
Rather than offering a single historical perspective, the exhibition celebrates the richness and complexity of Black identity, positioning artists as cultural stewards, truth tellers, and visionaries whose work inspires reflection, healing, and possibility. As the curatorial team notes, "We believe art has the power to help us remember, reimagine, and rebuild."
Public programming expands the conversation beyond the gallery, including a Black Creative AI Workshop examining the intersection of emerging technology and Black cultural production. Additional events will be announced throughout the exhibition's run.
Located on Level 2 of Block 37 in downtown Chicago, The Art of Blackness 2026 runs through July 10. Produced by NAOMI Projects in partnership with Audacity Creative, the exhibition continues to serve as a vital platform connecting artists, collectors, and the broader community while affirming Black creativity as both a reflection of the present and a blueprint for imagining new futures.
