NATURE OF REALITY | KARI BLAK'S ENVIRONMENTAL MURAL BLOOMS AT HYDE PARK ART CENTER
On the east garage doors of the Hyde Park Art Center (HPAC), a flower with a face is crying while a bumblebee moves to console it. It is a small gesture inside a large question, and it sits at the heart of Nature of Reality, the mural series by Chicago artist Kari Blak.
Blak merged five distinct vignettes into one cohesive narrative, each addressing a different facet of the relationship between humanity and the natural world. Working in his signature style, he uses colorful, approachable characters to carry complex social challenges, so viewers of any age can step into the story before grasping its stakes.
The scenes move from grief toward possibility. End War considers what conflict does to land, wildlife, and community alike. Another vignette celebrates pollinators, from bumblebees and butterflies to beetles and ladybugs, arguing that biodiversity is what holds ecosystems together. A third joins the hands of his flower and bumblebee characters into a heart, a declaration of love for every creature, plant, and body of water. A fourth shows rising seas washing away homes and neighborhoods. The fifth, the most symbolic, presents a flower figure melting an ice cube, a gesture of solidarity with immigrants and with citizens swept up in enforcement actions.
The imagery began as pencil sketches, later digitized and first shown in Blak's solo exhibition last year. Bringing them to the wall grew from a scheduling reality. After teaching a mural class at the Art Center with his mother Dorian Sylvain last summer, Blak was invited to lead this year's program but could not spare eight weeks. He proposed that the Art Center give him a wall and a budget instead, and the mural took shape.
He did not paint alone. A team of assistants and interns joined him, including two students from last summer's class, the children of family friends, and a neighborhood girl who asked to help.
The flower character has its own origin story. Roughly five years ago, Blak worked as a cashier and doodled on receipts until hundreds of drawings revealed a recurring figure. Today that figure anchors Petalhead LLC, his lifestyle brand bridging humanity and nature, and a forthcoming graphic novel.
A Chicago native trained at Chicago High School for the Arts, Blak has spent a decade as a muralist, with clients including Whole Foods and Mariano's. Nature of Reality asks viewers to consider their role in the planet's ongoing story. Blak will be in conversation with Mariele Acuna at the HPAC on September 26th from 2- 3 p.m.
