THE OTHERWORLD IS HOME AT THE HAGGERTY MUSEUM

Marquette University's fall exhibitions trace African art and diaspora identity across centuries

This fall, the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University opened The Otherworld Is Home, a museum-wide presentation exploring personal reclamation, cultural identity, and spiritual passage across Africa's many diasporas. Inspired by the Yorùbá proverb “Life is a journey, the otherworld is home,” the exhibition unfolds across three simultaneous shows: African Art: Ancient Roots, Enduring Values, curated by scholar Henry John Drewal and drawing nearly 40 works from the Haggerty's own collection; Iké Udé: Sartorial Anarchy, a photographic series merging clothing and objects across cultures and eras, curated by Lynne Shumow; and Thresholds, bringing together Aisha Tandiwe Bell, Portia Cobb, Stephen Hamilton, and Daniel Minter in dialogue with African works from the Haggerty's holdings, organized in partnership with the Indigo Arts Alliance.

The exhibitions are free and open to the public through December 19, 2026.
