PALMER MUSEUM MARKS BETYE SAAR'S LEGACY WITH CURATOR TALK

The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State continues its tribute to Betye Saar with a curator talk by Jane Carpenter-Rock, Deputy Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery. Carpenter-Rock wrote her doctoral dissertation on Saar's work and is the author of Betye Saar, part of the David C. Driskell Series of African American Art. Her talk arrives weeks after Saar's passing on July 26, just days before what would have been her 100th birthday, lending the conversation added weight.
The talk accompanies Constellations: Celebrating the Legacies of Betye Saar, curated by Assistant Director Joyce Robinson and centered on Saar's 1967 assemblage Vision of El Cremo. The show, drawn largely from the museum's permanent collection, also features work by Saar's daughters Alison and Lezley Saar, along with Kara Walker, Romare Bearden, and Sam Gilliam, tracing the constellation of artists Saar's practice continues to influence.
